Marathonas Bay

The largest bay of the island, about 2 km long, is ideal for water sports and endless enjoyment at its two organised beaches and numerous tavernas, with its restful setting and a view toward Agistri, Methana and the Peloponnesian coast. The calm waters of Marathonas offered safe anchorage, even in antiquity. It was here that in 480 BC, the Greek ships gathered following the naval battle of Salamis, and here that the first governor of liberated Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias, landed on 11 January 1828.
